Having just finished my 9th year of full-time music teaching, I am currently the general/vocal music teacher at Zephyr Elementary School (Whitehall-Coplay School District, Whitehall, PA). During my three years of directing the chorus at Zephyr Elementary School, the program exploded from 75 students in one chorus to approximately 200 students in two choruses, and saw improvements in part-singing and showmanship (choreography, props, instruments, lighting, etc.).
In the classroom, I added bucket drumming (through donations from local businesses) and ukulele (for which I secured a grant) to the curriculum. I also introduced World Drumming, which has been a student favorite, into the curriculum. I introduced and strengthened musical concepts using a variety of activities to reach diverse learners with varying interest and ability levels through the use of singing, dancing, rhythmic/movement activities, and games. I incorporate Orff and Kodaly methods in my lessons and use technology to enhance student motivation and learning.
Prior to Whitehall, I taught music for the Bangor Area School District for 6 years working at both Five Points (K-2) and Washington (3-4) Elementary Schools. Highlights from my Bangor years include building the 3rd/4th Grade Chorus program, instructing overflow band lessons when needed, directing music for our Veteran's Day program, music for Kindergarten Graduation, teaching 3rd Grade Recorders, and special chorus performances in our "Music in Our Schools Month" department showcase at Bangor High School.
My belief that music is meant to be performed, felt, and expressed is evident throughout my teaching. Professional colleagues have confirmed my strong affinity for elementary/vocal general music with encouraging feedback on my classroom management skills, rapport with elementary-aged students, creativity, enthusiasm, flexibility, and professionalism.I continue to grow professionally by taking summer music education graduate courses (University of the Arts), attending professional workshops and conferences, and participating in face-to-face and online Professional Learning Networks.
